Urology

The Urology department offers a diagnostic and treatment service for all urological problems.

We are responsible for the diagnosis and management of kidney, bladder, prostate, testicular and penile cancers. The department also sees patients with other urological conditions such as enlarged prostate problems (BPH), incontinence, urine infections, erectile problems and kidney stones.

For the vast majority of patients, investigations and surgery can be undertaken on the Island, though some specialised cancer operations may involve travel to Portsmouth.

Rapid assessment is available for patients with blood in the urine, followed by x-ray and ultrasound scan, and then a flexible cystoscopy (inspection of the bladder by camera).

If you require a biopsy for suspected prostate cancer it will be done in the x-ray department by the radiologists, but the results will be discussed with your urologist.

Urodynamics (bladder pressure testing) and urine flow measurements are performed in the outpatients department.

  • Professional memberships: BAUS,ICS
  • Clinical interests: General urology, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence
  • Qualifications: MB BS, FRCS, Dip(UROL), FRCS(Urol), M.SC(Urol), FEBU

I have been a consultant urological surgeon since 1999 in Worcester Royal Infirmary before moving to the Isle of Wight in 2000.

I am the sole consultant urological surgeon on the Island and my practice covers general urology. This encompasses prostatic diseases, kidney stones and kidney tumours, bladder, penile and testicular problems. However, my area of special interest is urinary incontinence. Since the advent of key hole surgery, urinary incontinence can now be treated with surgical slings and tapes almost on a day case basis and I am involved with teaching fellow urologists and gynaecologists how to insert these slings safely.

My other specialist interests include erectile dysfunction (impotence) and treatment of infertility. I perform vasectomies and vasectomy reversals on a day care basis. These are in addition to my many other urological activities
